How to Read a Fence Build
A finished fence looks much the same whoever built it. The parts that decide whether it is still straight in five years are the parts you can only see while it is going up, which is why the detail below matters more than a gallery of finished panels.
Look at the posts first. Depth below the frost line, set in concrete, with the concrete crowned so water runs away from the post rather than pooling at the collar. On a wood fence the buried post should be pressure-treated and rated for ground contact, which is a different rating from the boards above it.
Then look at the line. On a slope a fence is either stepped, keeping each panel level and dropping in increments, or racked, angling the panel to follow the grade. Both are correct; a fence that wanders between the two is not. At corners and gates, check that the post carrying the load is heavier than the line posts, because a gate post takes a swinging load every day.
