Fence FAQ: Materials, Cost & HOA Rules
Common questions across every fence job we do in North Alabama, in one place. For material-specific and town-specific questions, check the individual service and location pages.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a permit to build a fence?
Most standard residential fences do not require a building permit, but corner lots, taller fences, and drainage easements can trigger zoning rules, and HOA approval is a separate step. We check both before any post goes in the ground.
How much does a fence cost?
It depends on material, length, gates, and terrain. See our fence cost page for what drives the price, and get a free written estimate for an exact number.
How long does installation take?
Most residential fences finish in 1 to 3 days once materials arrive. We schedule the on-site estimate within the same week you call.
Will you handle HOA approval?
Yes. We prepare the site drawing, material specs, and height details most North Alabama HOAs require, and build to your community’s published guidelines.
What is the best fence material?
There is no single best material, it depends on your goal. See our wood, vinyl, aluminum, and chain link pages for a side-by-side comparison of each.
How do I prepare my yard before installation day?
Move anything within a few feet of the fence line: planters, furniture, trash bins, and anything fragile. Trim back shrubs or vines growing along the line so the crew can work. If you have pets, plan on keeping them inside while gates are open. If a sprinkler system runs near the line, tell us at the estimate so we can plan post locations around the heads and lines.
Do you offer financing?
Yes, see our financing page for details on available payment plans.
How close to the property line can I build?
Most homeowners build a few inches inside their own line so every part of the fence, including the footing, stays on their property. Setback requirements vary by jurisdiction and some HOAs specify a distance. If the boundary is genuinely unclear, a survey settles it before we dig rather than after a neighbor disputes it.
Who owns the fence between two properties?
Whoever paid for it and had it installed on their own land owns it. Fences built directly on a shared boundary by agreement are usually jointly owned, which is why we recommend building inside your line unless you and the neighbor have a written arrangement.
Can you build a fence on a slope?
Yes. Panels are either stepped, which keeps each section level and leaves triangular gaps at the bottom, or racked, which angles the panel to follow the grade. Racking looks cleaner on a gentle slope; stepping is the option on steep grade. We tell you which one your lot needs at the estimate.
How long does a fence last?
Pressure-treated pine typically 12 to 15 years here, cedar 15 to 20 or more, vinyl and aluminum longer still. Post depth and sealing schedule matter more than the material label. See our post on wood fence lifespan in Alabama humidity.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. See our About page for details.
